Academic Advising

The Academic Advising Center provides professional academic advising to virtually all entering The Art Institute of Washington. However, all students are welcome to contact the Academic Advising Center with questions. The Academic Advisors promotes students' development and academic success by: scheduling 1st quarter classes; providing high quality academic advising to help students grow intellectually and personally; facilitating students' academic transition into and through AiW; offering connections with the diverse community of scholars and more.

Academic advising is mandatory to create a schedule for your first quarter at AiW. Meetings with an adviser are confidential and are designed to provide students with the information needed for a successful academic career.

Advisor / Student

What does an Academic Advisor do?
Academic advisers provide intensive support through regular contact with their advisees. Advisers help students explore various fields of interest, academic major, career options that relate to their programs; and develop plans of study appropriate for their educational goals. They also refer students to other campus offices for assistance in academic, personal and career counseling; academic skills development; and financial aid.
Visit your adviser when you:

  • are having academic difficulties
  • need someone to talk to about personal issues.
  • have questions about majors, minors, certificate programs.
  • have questions about the registration process.
  • have questions about anything on campus from, "How to drop or add classes" to "Where can I get career information?"

Confidentiality

Students are considered adults when they come to The Art Institute of Washington. As adults, their right to confidentiality is insured through a federal law, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA). This means that the Advising Center, as well as other offices on campus, cannot disclose any academic or personal information about a student to anyone unless the student has given written permission to do so.

Life Skills

The Academic Advisors teach the Life Skills course. All incoming students must take the Life Skills course to ease the transition from high school to college. Each week is a different presentation regarding topics that are relavent to all college students. Staff and faculty from the school present programs in their respected field. Class meetings cover such topics as registration, test taking skills, nutrition, personal finance, alcohol and drug awareness, and selecting a major.
